De diplomaat Jean Duggan-Foschetti van de Foreign Press Centre heeft op de website van de desbetreffende US Department of State een kort bericht geplaatst over de women empowerment reporting tour waar elf journalisten uit het Caribisch gebied aan mee hebben gedaan, inclusief Suriname. Het was de eerste tour die werd georganiseerd met dit thema en de tour was te danken aan de prioriteiten van Hillary Clinton’s secretariaat.

Farewell dinner at PittyPat’s Porche in Atlanta
Dit was the farewell dinner die de Washington Foreign Press Center de elf Caribische journalisten had aangeboden tegen het eind van de Women Empowerment Reporting Tour naar Washington en Atlanta. Nadat we klaar waren met eten bracht een verliefde ober alerlei lekkernijen voor me, die ik niet op kon. Dus bracht hij verpakkingsmateriaal. Vandaar dat alleen ik zit met een grote plastiek zak voor me. De ober is de maker van deze foto. Buiten het restaurant moest ik die lekkernijen aan mijn collegae afgeven, omdat ik geen snoeper ben en omdat ..., you never know. Ze vonden dat ik mijn green card had misgelopen.
Dit was mijn gerecht! Gebakken Spare Ribbs met een sausje ernaast en wat bruine rijst. Alleen de spare ribbs was al voldoende om een goed gevuld gevoel te krijgen, want voordat we ons hoofdgerecht op aten in het Italiaans restaurant mochten wij ons te goed doen aan een voorgerecht on the house en dat was allerlei soorten salades naar eigen keus.
Dr. Lilliam Fondeur – Quiñones is de journalist waarmee de Surinaamse delegatie het meest bevriend is geraakt gedurende de tour. Ze is gynaecoloog, schrijft voor een vrouwen blad in de Dominicaanse Republiek en is geïnteresseerd in de vrouwenhandel in Suriname
Pittypat’s Porch is gelegen in Atlanta en is ingericht als een oude plantage, compleet met antieke Amerikaanse meubels en een veranda waar gasten kunnen nippen aan een drankje en kijken naar het diner beneden. Het restaurant werd bij de oprichting in 1967 genoemd naar Scarlett O’Hara’s tante in de film “Gone with the Wind,” vanwege haar bekendheid en karakter. Wanneer Scarlett deze Staat bezocht bleef ze altijd bij haar tante Pittypat. Gedurende dit verblijf bereidde tante Pitty haar beste recepten. Bij Pittypat’s Porch wordt deze traditie gecontinueerd.
Caribisch Gebied moet mensenhandel in kaart brengen.
Er bestaat een noodzaak in het Caribisch gebied om mensenhandel in kaart te brengen. Voor wat handel in vrouwen betreft is er een grote terughoudendheid vanuit de overheid in de Caribische landen om informatie te verschaffen, inclusief die van Suriname. Dit heeft invloed uitgeoefend op het werk van de Inter-Amerikaanse Commissie van Vrouwen (CIM), waardoor er nu een holistische benadering wordt gehanteerd voor de aanpak van het probleem. Suriname tekent leningovereenkomst met IDB voor sociale bescherming en gezondheid
Suriname heeft vorige week een leningovereenkomst van 15 miljoen US$ getekend met de Inter American Development Bank (IDB) om een sociale beschermings- en gezondheidsprogramma uit te voeren. Deze informatie is vandaag naar boven gekomen tijdens een presentatie van Ferdinando Regalia, chef van de IDB-afdeling Gezondheid en Sociale Bescherming, aan de groep van Caribische journalisten die een ‘Women’s Empowerment Reporting Tour’ naar Washington D.C. en Atlanta ondernemen op kosten van het Centrum voor Buitenlandse Pers en het Bureau voor Westelijk Halfrond Zaken van het Amerikaans Staats Departement. Het Centrum voor Buitenlandse Pers en het Bureau voor Westelijk Halfrond Zaken van het Amerikaans Staats Departement heeft het mogelijk gemaakt dat elf Caribische journalisten deelnemen aan een ‘Women’s Empowerment Reporting Tour’ naar Washington D.C. en Atlanta, Georgia.
Het doel van de tour is: het leiderschap van de Verenigde Staten van Amerika te demonstreren in het tegengaan van huiselijk geweld; pogingen te tonen tvan grassroots organisaties om vrouwen sociaal en economisch te versterken; over tactieken te discussiëren om programma’s te ontwikkelen die vrouwen helpen en om gezonde journalistiek te bevorderen in het Caribisch Gebied. It is comprised of Javanese, Hindustanis, Chinese, Lebanese, Jews, Dutch, Creoles, Maroons and Indigenous peoples. In past decennia, Haitian and Brazilian[1] groups joined them. Anthropologists of five South American countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Suriname) are conducting a research known as the Gomiam project, on how to resolve conflicts caused by small-scale gold mining in the Amazon region. About ten scientists are involved.

According to the Dutch Anthropologist Marjo de Theije, whom had the idea of this project, the focus on the Amazon basin is important because small scale gold mining faces a multitude of acute environmental problems which affect ecosystems on a global scale, but it also has large economic benefits. “Gold mining is one of the most important economic activities in this region, supporting for example the livelihoods of an estimated 12% of Suriname’s population. Peru is the world’s fifth producer of gold, and Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Suriname are all in the top thirty. Moreover, the opening of large-scale mines (Yanacocha in Peru, Gros Rosebel in Suriname) and the recent sharp rise in gold prices has increased the production in most South American countries”, she says.
According to her, in 2008 registered production of gold in the five countries was almost 300.000 kilo, a figure in which large part of the gold produced by small-scale miners “is not even counted.”
Social and environmental achievements are threatened
Last month Marieke started the first phase of the research at the mining community of Brownsweg, which is situated in the district of Brokopondo, about 100 km south of the capital city of Paramaribo. A co-researcher is the mining engineer Ramon Vinki. He looks at the mining part of the research together with his students of the Anton de Kom University of Suriname. “We register the methods and techniques and the operational costs of the companies within the small scale mining to know if it is possible to minimize the operational costs. It is difficult to find out their exact income. We will also look at the environmental pollution of water and soil”. An estimated 20-30% of adult men are working in the small-scale gold mining areas.

?“Bolpebra is a small village in the northeast of Bolivia (department of Pando). Recently, informal small-scale gold mining has expanded and inhabitants report an ‘invasion‘ of Peruvians into the territory, who together with immigrating Brazilian and up-rushing Bolivian miners, form international miners’ camps of in total 35-40.000 miners. The region shows considerable numbers of malaria and dengue”.
Brazil
“Tapajós is the most important gold mining region of Brazil. Nowadays approximately 20.000 miners work in the region, producing 20 to 30 kg of gold per day. Both large-scale and the small-scale mining were affected by a federal government decision in 2005, that limited the use of land around the Highway BR 163. Part of the territory was declared protected area for nature conservation. Despite this new legal framework small-scale mining continues, now in a ‘not legalized’ way”.
Colombia
“Oro Verde is the world’s first pilot certification scheme that differentiates responsibly mined gold and platinum in order for it to be sold as green and fair metals in specialized market niches.This initiative currently involves around 700 certified artisanal miners of the local Afro-Colombian population, who protect 4500 ha of tropical rainforest.
In spite of Oro Verde’s success, for a miner to be legal, he/she has to do artisanal subsistence mining or possess a mining concession under the same requirements asked from large mining corporations”.
Peru
“The most important informal small-scale gold mining area of Peru is located in the Madre de Dios department, where mining interacts with both nature conservation and the infrastructural opening of the Amazon. However, over the past decade, the situation has grown critic and unsustainable through the invasion of more immigrant miners and poor Andean workers. This was exacerbated by the construction of the Inter-Oceanic Highway, which links the regional capital of Puerto Maldonado to coastal Peru and the Brazilian border. This increased accessibility causes a new gold rush of a dimension that is beyond the control capacity of local state authorities”.
Mining impacts
The gold mining technique has numerous environmental impacts, like river turbidity, mercury pollution, threats from improperly constructed tailing dams, river siltation, acid mine drainage, land degradation and soil erosion, deforestation, landscape reduction. The damage has its impact on human health and biodiversity and the loss of biodiversity has on his part an impact on the local communities.
In Suriname, for example, they have no access to safe drinking water from the river and the creeks and have loss of agricultural ground. They only can meet their livelihoods with growing difficulties. Because of the water turbid the quality of the fishes reduces and because of mercury pollution of the rivers the fishes contains a high level of mercury, what threatens their health. Researchers have found high levels of mercury in indigenous women of the Wajana village Apetina at the Tapanahony river in the south of Suriname. During the mining operations, many conflicts arise between miners, villagers, government and large scale Canadian gold mining companies.

BEP distancieert zich van AC-MC oereenkomst
De BEP heeft zich gisteravond in een structurenvergadering gedistancieerd van de overeenkomst die de voorzitter van A Combinatie Ronnie Brunswijk heeft ondertekend met de Mega Combinatie. Ze heeft mandaat gekregen om als zelfstandige eenheid te onderhandelen met MC voor een te vormen coalitie.
De BEP accepteert de overeenkomst tussen Brunswijk en Mega Combinatie
niet, omdat diens voorzitter geen bijdrage heeft geleverd in de onderhandelingen om te komen tot een overeenkomst. Volgens deze overeenkomst krijgt de A Combinatie het beheer van zes ministeries (j
ustitie en politie, volksgezondheid, transport, communicatie en toerisme, sport en jeugdzaken, regionale ontwikkeling, sociale zaken en volkshuisvesting) en het vice presidentschap.

Na te hebben uitgelegd over het verloop van de samenwerking met Nieuw Front kreeg de BEP-leiding ook toestemming van de structuren om de samenwerking met Nieuw Front te verbreken. Deze samenwerking is spaak gelopen, omdat een AC-partner voor verrader is uitgemaakt en daardoor een verdere samenwerking onmogelijk is geworden.
De BEP-structurenvergadering die rumoerig verliep werd enkele malen geschorst en een keer zelfs tot nader order.. Ronnie Brunswijk liep namelijk de vergadering binnen en confronteerde de BEP-leiding met een overeenkomst die hij zonder medeweten van de BEP-partner als AC voorzitter had ondertekend met de Mega Combinatie. De BEP-leiding pikte dit niet. Felisi was eerst niet te spreken over de handelwijze dat Brunswijk een interne vergadering binnenliep, want toen hij een structurenvergadering had is de BEP-leiding ook niet naar binnen gewandeld. Leo Brunswijk voelde zich aangesproken en wilde uit de vergadering weg lopen, maar werd teruggeroepen door Felici, die zei dat het gezegde niet voor de ABOP-leden geldt.
Na de schorsing tot nader order liepen enkele BEP-toppers weg, maar niet zonder de pers te woord te hebben gestaan.

De structuren wilden niets horen over een schorsing tot nader order en stonden erop dat direct besluiten werden genomen. Ze weigerden het BEP-gebouw te verlaten. Alendy sprak hen toe en verduidelijkte het doel van de vergadering. ,,De bedoeling van de vergadering was om te weten te komen of we de samenwerking met het Nieuw Front moeten verbreken en als we moeten onderhandelen met de Mega Combinatie,” zei hij. Hierna verkreeg hij toestemming tot beëindiging van de samenwerking met Nieuw Front en mandaat om verder te onderhandelen met Mega Combinatie.
De BEP-structuren maakten nog de afspraak ‘stand by’ te blijven voor een
volgende vergadering, waarin de stand van zaken over de onderhandelingen
