De Full Bright scholars van de Study on United States Institutes of Journalism and Media (SUSI) hebben een bezoek gebracht aan verschillende televisie stations in verschillende Staten van de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Zo brachten ze een bezoek aan het hoofdkantoor van CNN, 10 TV News in Columbus/Ohio en WOIO TV in Cleveland/Ohio

Bij CNN hadden ze een gesprek met de CNN International Newsource Eli Flournoy, die al 21 jaar is bij CNN, waarvan 19 jaar bij de internationale afdeling, waar hij de reportage over het internatonaal nieuws coördineert. Op deze afdeling werken er 30 verschillende nationaliteiten. Er zijn meer dan 100 affiliated stations over de gehele wereld en 900 in de VS waarmee CNN in partnershap samen werkt. Ze delen video’s. ＂We need to have partnerships to understand local perspectives of stories,＂zei Flournoy aan de SUSI-scholars. Volgens hem verzamelt CNN materiaal overal in de wereld waar er nieuws te halen valt. Wereldwijd zijn er 4000 werknemers en in Atlanta zijn er 2500. CNN is een 100% commerciële omroep en bestaat uit 14 verschillende platforms en kanalen. Om efficiënt te werken trachten ze een zo groot mogelijke audience te vinden voor hun verhaal en dat loopt hand in hand met advertenties. ＂We are selling the stories. It is the only commercial organization that is expending international,＂ zei Flournoy.

Multiple Platforms

CNN heeft multiple platforms en als iemand als journalist daar wil werken dan moet hij een multiple platform journalist zijn. ＂You cannot

be from one platform. You have to know multiple languages, different styles of working. Journalists must have multi platform skills. There is a cross over between technique and journalism in this digital age. We have the highest standards for journalists and we have the best journalists around the world.＂ zei Flournoy. Volgens hem is de grootst groep journalisten die werkt bij CNN afkomstig van de Ohio University.

Hij vindt het belangrijk dat studenten begrijpen, dat ze praktijk ervaring moeten opdoen tijdens hun studie, want ze zullen moeilijk werk vinden bij de media als ze geen praktijk ervaring hebben, tenminste bij de media in de VS. Ook internationale stages zijn voor hem van belang. ＂International experience is an important factor to understand the mind set. You must have a global mind set, because we are covering stories globally, global curiosity and sensitivity.＂ Sinds zijn aantreden bij CNN hebben twee journalisten door hun werk de dood gevonden in Irak en vijf chauffeurs in Somalië.

10 TV News

Bij 10 TV News – een stedelijke locale televisie station – was Elbert Tucker, de direkteur van het nieuws, trots op de ratings van zijn televisiestation. ＂Higher ratings mean higher profits. Lower ratings mean lower profit.＂ WBNS heeft volgens hem succesvolle ratings. Dit station is nauw verbonden met de gemeenschap in Atlanta. ＂If there is a disaster we want to help. If there is something big coming we want to be there.＂

Tucker vertelde, dat er een grote storm op komst was, die effect had op 6000 mensen. Ze konden niet naar televisie kijken, omdat de elektriciteit was uitgevallen. Het televisie station maakte toen gebruik van de mobiele telefoon om ze met tekst boodschappen op de hoogte te stellen van de storm. Op de redactie zijn er 87 medewerkers. Tegen 09:00 hebben ze hun redactie vergadering, tegen 14:00 weer voor eventuele veranderingen en om 17:00 gaat het nieuws de lucht in. Hun brood met boter is hot news.

Breaking News is belangrijk

Breaking news is belangrijk voor 10 TV News. Vandaar dat ze ook breaking news apps hebben voor mobiele internet apparaten zoals smartphones, ipads en laptops. Hun filosofie is veel geld te besteden aan het geven van feedback aan hun audience. Ze hebben breaking news op televisie en op hun website. Ze zijn agressief in het stoppen van een programma om nieuws over het weer te tonen, wat gebeurde bij de tornado die enkele weken geleden op komst was. Zonder waarschuwing van de televisie gaan een heleboel mensen namelijk dood.

10 TV wil bekend staan als de leider van breaking news en heeft een helicopter ter beschikking om nieuws te vergaren. Tijdens het drama van de aanslag op de twin tower was deze helikopter in de lucht en heeft een van de kleine vliegtuigen die de toren was in gevlogen gespot WBNS was dus de eerste die beelden vertoonde over dit drama.

Life Uitzendingen en sociale media

Er worden ook life gebeurtenissen vertoond. Bijvoorbeeld die van de presidentsverkiezingen. Net zoals de journalisten bij Wall & Post beweren ook de journalisten bij WBNS dat geen enkele presidentskandidaat tot president wordt gekozen zonder dat hij heeft gewonnen in de Staat Ohio. Vandaar dat elke presidentskandidaat campagne voert in Ohio. Het gelukte WBNS dan ook een persoonlijk interview af te nemen van de presidentskandidaten, alhoewel dat zeer moeilijk is te doen.

Een van de Ohio-professoren zei tijdens zijn lezing in de klas, dat ze dat doorgaans niet doen, omdat ze hun eigen sociale media gebruiken. Dergelijke media zijn overigens zeer populair in de Verenigde Staten. Elk medium die de SUSI-scholars hebben bezocht blijkt actief te zijn op facebook en twitter. Veel van hun nieuws halen ze uit dergelijke media en door deze media onderhouden ze contact met hun gehoor.

Overheid reguleert over the air

Over the air tv-stations worden gereguleerd door de overheid, maar kabel en satelliet tv-stations worden niet gereguleerd. Alle tv-signalen zijn digitaal. In 2008 zijn alle analoge signalen veranderd in digitale signalen. De televisiestations hebben ‘towers’ moeten opzetten en de kijkers hebben een andere tv-toestel moeten kopen. Degenen die dat niet konden hebben bonnen gekregen van de overheid om een aangepaste tv te kunnen kopen. Voor kabel en satelliet tv moeten mensen zich abonneren.

Video over magische truc

Voor wat WOIO-tv, een echte rurale locale tv-station, betreft kan er een video worden bekeken. Net zoals vele TV-stations in Amerika heeft de WOIO TV in Cleveland een magische truc bedacht om informatie over het weer door te geven. Hiervan hebben de Full Bright Scholars van de Sripps School of Journalism, een faculteit van de Ohio University, een demonstratie gekregen en mochten de scholars de truc zelf ervaren (zie video).

Segregation! I had never heard of this word until the professors of Scripps School of Journalism brought the SUSI-scholars to the Martin Luther King (1929 – 1968) national historic site in Georgia/Atlanta. There I have learned that under segregation two different and isolated social worlds awaited black and white Americans, beginning in their childhood. Segregation was intended to send a strong lifelong psychological message: black people were inferior to whites and should be kept separated.

When I first came to Athens I heard from some of the professors of Scripps School of Journalism that there was a storm, which caused a lack of electricity in Athens/Ohio. Some areas such as that of professor Yusuf Kalyango from Oeganda did not had electricity for one week. When we were in Pennsylvania/Cleveland Athens experienced another storm, so we did not had internet access when we came back in our apartments.

In Pittsburgh/Pennsylvania the SUSI scholars 2012 visited the Andy Warhol museum. I didn’t know who he was, but the fact that the professors of Scripps School of Journalism brought us there made me wonder who this man was. By reading the information on his timeline at the museum I came to know his fame.

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. This kind of art became extremely popular in the second half of the twentieth century. It was a new style of art that began in England in the mid-1950s and consisted of realistic renditions of popular, everyday items. He earned a bachelor of art degree in Fine Arts in pictorial design with the goal of becoming a commercial illustrator. Soon after graduating he moved from Pittsburgh, where he was born, to New York to pursue a career as commercial artist. He became one of the most successful illustrators of the 1950s, winning numerous awards.

At the beginning of this week was the first of the three cultural tours offered to the SUSI scholars on media and journalism by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, a faculty of Ohio University.

Visiting Cal & Post

The tour lasted five days. During those days the scholars executed media and cultural activities in Cleveland/Ohio and Pittsburgh/Pennsylvania. So except Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, they have also visited an 95 years old African American weekly newspaper in Cleveland named Call & Post. ,,The readership of the newspaper is not only black. The majority of the people in Ohio loves to read what black people are doing,” Constance Harper, Call & Post’s associate publisher/editor said. The newspaper was established in 1929 by a group of people including local African-American inventor Garrett A. Morgan (1877 – 1963), as a merger between the Cleveland Call and the Cleveland Post, two newspapers which had been serving the African American community since 1916 and 1920 respectively. Last Sunday was the beginning of five day cultural Study tour to Cleveland. We visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Rock and Roll started in Cleveland at the black people. White youth were not allowed to listen to that music. It is a form of popular music that emerged in the United States in the late forties and early fifties, but rock and roll’s roots can be traced back centuries, to drum beats in Africa and Celtic folk music in Europe. As people from these regions migrated to America, they brought their music with them and as they were exposed to each other’s music, they began to incorporate the different styles. The more immediate roots of rock and roll lay in the so called ‘race’ music or rhythms & blues and ‘hillbilly’ music or country & western of the forties and fifties. Other significant influences include blues, jazz, gospel, boogie-woogie, folk and blue grass. The actual phrase ‘rock and roll’ emerged as code words for sexual intercourse on blues songs. In 1922 the words rock and roll appeared on a record for the first time.

When rock and roll was born in the fifties popular music was, virtually by definition, white music made by and performed for mainstream white Americans. The music that influenced rock and roll on the other hand did not appeal to the mainstream. Some of those styles – like rhythm & blues were more urban, while others – like country and bluegrass were more rural. Some, like gospel, sprang from the church while others like the blues espoused views as horrent to the church. Many of them had their own origins in the American South. But they all had one thing in common: they spoke to the more disenfranchised elements of American society – to African Americans and poor whites. Now many forms of music found their origin in rock and roll such as soul, rap and even reggae.

The museum consists of six levels on which you can see the roots of rock and roll in cars, movies, interactive listening exhibits and magazines. We were not allowed to take pictures and videos in the area where the history of rock & roll is visualized, but still it was worthwhile to be there and put the history on your eye balls. Dresses, jackets, electronic and acoustic guitars, records, photographs, original written lyrics, saxophones, spectacles and shoes are shown of popular stars such as Mahalia Jackson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, Al Green, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, the Staple Singers, Aretha Franklyn, Joe Tex, James Brown, Nat King Cole, Wanda Jackson, Charles Brown, Bob Wills, Ray Charles, Billy Holiday, Sam Cooke, Johnny Otis and Michael Jackson.

Het was een lange reis van 1×24 uur voordat ik in Ohio aankwam voor de Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) for Journalism and Media Scholars (5 juli tot 17 augustus 2012). Paramaribo – Trinidad & Tobago – Miami – Atlanta – Columbus. Met pijn in de benen kwam ik eindelijk in mijn kamer aan op de campus van Ohio University in Athens, die een hele stad bleek te zijn, gebouwd in de heuvels, compleet met restaurants, bars, dancings, jazz clubs, winkels, banken, bibliotheken, televisie en radio station en drukke straten.

De volgende dag was de introductie. Alle scholars waren in de ontmoetingsruimte. Zij zijn geselecteerd uit 18 ontwikkelingslanden: Afghanistan, Armenië, Bahama’s, Kameroen, China, El Salvador, Ghana, Jordanië, Pakistan, Kazachstan, Rusland, Rwanda, Soedan, Suriname, Taiwan, Oekraïne, Vietnam en Jemen. Allen zijn docenten journalistiek aan een universiteit of hogeschool.

Onze gastheer is professor Yusuf Kaliango, SUSI program director en director Institute for International Journalism. Het programma dat hij ons overhandigde, bestaat uit allerlei lezingen (over media-economie, politieke mobilisatie en democratie, nieuwe media en technologie, gemeenschapsjournalistiek, ontwikkelingscommunicatie, media-effecten, strategische communicatie), workshops, focus group-discussions, media bezoeken en culturele dagtochten naar Atlanta, Cleveland, Pittsburg, Chicago en Washington D.C. Voorlopig zijn we nog in de introductiefase, waarin we o.a. een rondrit kregen door de campus.

Zaterdagmorgen krijgen we een overzicht van de doelen van het programma en de culturele studie-tripjes en zaterdagavond is er een welcome ceremony met diner. Het officiële programma begint aanstaande maandag. De studie wordt gefinancieerd door de US Department of State’s Study of the US Branch of the office of Academic Exchange Programs.

In de introductiefase moeten alle kinderziekten worden weggenomen zoals onvoldoende beschikbaarheid van internet. Wij kregen allemaal appartementen die werden gedeeld door drie scholars. Ik deel een appartement met Dr. Aysha Abdulla Abu Ghazzi  uit Jordanie en Bogdana Mykolayivna Nosova  uit Ukraine. Iedereen had internet op de kamer behalve ik.

Het heeft mij een hele dag gekost om dit probleem te laten oplossen en tot nu toe is het niet helemaal verholpen. Telkens vroeg ik weer iemand anders van de organisatie om mij te helpen. Op een gegeven moment stevende ik weer het appartement binnen met een andere helper. Dit keer was het een technologiestudent. Ik deed de deur van het appartement open en zag een van mijn room mates geschrokken wegrennen.

Ik vroeg mij af wat dat betekende en hoorde later van haar dat ze moslim is en niet zonder hijab mag worden gezien door mannen. Nu weet ik dus dat ik geen mannen in het appartement mag brengen. Vrouwen meenemen in het apartement is eigenlijk ook een probleem voor mijn room mate. Wij moeten haar van tevoren melden, zodat ze zich terug kan trekken in haar kamer, want ze wil ook niet worden gezien in haar short (huiskleding).

Om efficiënt verslag te doen van de Amerikaanse politiek, economie, cultuur en samenleving kunnen buitenlandse journalisten gebruik maken van verschillende diensten die Foreign Press Centers aanbieden in Washington, DC en New York. Deze centa zijn onderdeel van de US State Department of State. Ze werken samen met de afdeling Publieke Zaken van de VS-ambassades om correspondenten te assisteren, die Amerika bezoeken voor opdrachten of participeren in professionele ‘reporting tours.’
